Coco musical stage adaptation is officially in the works

A stage adaptation of Disney and Pixar’s Coco is officially in development.

Inspired by the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, the 2017 animated film follows 12-year-old Miguel who is transported on an extraordinary adventure to the land of his ancestors.

News of a stage adaptation was announced at a Disney On Broadway concert event this week at EPCOT in Walt Disney World.

Coco features a score by Michael Giacchino with songs by Frozen’s Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez who won an Oscar for Remember Me which was performed by Mandy Gonzalez (In The Heights, Hamilton) at the concert.

Further details about Coco’s leap off the screen are to be announced.

The film is the latest Disney stage adaptation on its way with Hercules set to open at the Paper Mill Playhouse in the US next month while a musical adaptation of Winnie the Pooh will tour the UK from May.

Other stage adaptations include Newsies (currently playing in London), High School Musical, Mary Poppins, Frozen, Pinocchio, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, Tarzan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast
