Disney announces live action reimagining of Moana

A new live action take on Disney’s Moana is officially in the works.

Disney has announced Moana will be the latest of its animation films to get the live action treatment after the likes of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King.

The news was announced today by Dwayne Johnson who voiced Maui in the original film.

He shared on social media: “Humbled to say we’re bringing #MOANA’s beautiful story to the live action big screen!

“#MAUI changed my life (miss you grandpa) and I’m honored to partner with @DisneyStudios to tell our story thru the realm of music & dance, which at the core is who we are as Polynesian people.”

Further details including casting and a release date are to be confirmed.

Moana was originally released in 2016, making it the most recent of Disney’s animations to get the live action treatment.

Auli’i Cravalho stars in the title role of teenage Princess Moana who vows to fulfil her heroic destiny and save her people.

The musical movie features songs by Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, including the Grammy Award-winning How Far I’ll Go.

Other upcoming live action adaptations of Disney’s animations include The Little Mermaid, due out later this year, and Snow White.
