Dumbledore Is So Gay returns to London with new run at Southwark Playhouse this summer

Dumbledore Is So Gay is to return to London with a new run at Southwark Playhouse.

After two highly successful runs at VAULT Festival and Pleasance London, Dumbledore Is So Gay will play at Southwark Playhouse Borough from 16 August – 23 September 2023.

Written by Robert Holtom (The Quest and The Cluedo Club Killings, Arcola Theatre) and directed by Tom Wright (My Dad’s Gap Year, Park Theatre; Undetectable, King’s Head Theatre), the production is an homage to coming out and coming of age in the 2000s.

The cast will feature Alex Britt (Black Mirror, Netflix; EastEnders, BBC; F**king Men, Waterloo East Theatre; My Dad’s Gap Year, Park Theatre) as Jack, Charlotte Dowding (Splintered, Soho Theatre; Wind and the Willows, Derby Theatre; Romeo and Juliet, Young Shakespeare Company) as Gemma and Martin Sarreal (Tammy Faye, Almeida Theatre; Corrina Corrina, Headlong Theatre & Liverpool Everyman; Sin, Royal Court). as Ollie.

Life is far from straight for Jack: he’s in love with his best friend, he dodges bullies worse than Crabbe and Goyle and, according to the official online quiz, he’s a Hufflepuff. On a mission to get the guy, with a trusty Time Turner in his hand, Jack has the chance to turn back time and re-write history in his favour.

An optimistic celebration of love and resilience, Dumbledore Is So Gay was a critically acclaimed hit at VAULT Festival. The play shines a light on the struggle of coming out when ‘gay’ was a playground insult. While Jack’s story deals with tragic teenage isolation, what emerges is the importance of self-love and friendship to face the toughest of trials.

Writer Robert Holtom said: “I’m delighted to confirm that Dumbledore is still so gay. Accio laughs, tears and magic.”

Director Tom Wright added: “Robert is a terrific writer and has perfectly encapsulated the noughties gay experience in their heartfelt and hilarious play. We are thrilled to welcome Martin to the cast and look forward to these exceptional actors casting a spell on audiences at Southwark.”
