Lin-Manuel Miranda joins forces with John Kander for new Broadway musical based on 1977 film New York, New York

Lin-Manuel Miranda and John Kander are to write songs for a new Broadway musical loosely based on 1977 film New York, New York.

The new production will open in New York on Broadway on Friday 24 March at the St James Theatre.

As first reported by Deadline, the new musical will feature songs from the film by John Kander and Fred Ebb – including the iconic titular New York, New York – with Lin-Manuel Miranda penning new songs with Kander.

Tony and Olivier Award winner Susan Stroman is to direct and choreograph the piece which has a book by David Thompson co-written with Sharon Washington.

Leading the cast are Colton Ryanas Jimmy Doyle and Anna Uzele as Francine Evans. Full casting is to be confirmed.

Produced by Sonia Friedman (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, The Ferryman) and Tom Kirdahy (Inheritance), the creative team also includes music supervision and arrangements by Sam Davis, orchestrations by Daryl Waters and Davis, vocal arrangements by David Loud and music direction by Alvin Hough Jr.

While still set in a postwar 1946, it’s claimed the musical will follow a different story from the movie with exact details to be announced.
