Nanny McPhee musical ‘scheduled to open in the West End in 2023’

A musical adaptation of Nanny McPhee is reportedly heading to the West End in 2023.

The new musical is based upon the 2005 film of the same name, in turn inspired by Christianna Brand’s Nurse Matilda character.

Emma Thompson, who wrote and starred in the original movie, is working on the stage adaptation.

Thompson is writing the book and co-writing the lyrics with Gary Clark (Sing Street), who will be penning the music.

As first reported in an interview with Thompson in the New Yorker, the production is currently scheduled to open in the West End in 2023.

The actress and writer told the publication that the musical’s score has a “Victorian punk sound”, describing it as a “cross between the Tiger Lillies and Tom Waits’s ‘Swordfishtrombones.’”

Further details on the premiere production, including dates, venues, theatre and casting, are to be announced.

News of the Nanny McPhee musical was first revealed in 2018 with industry workshops taking place over recent years.
