New Alicia Keys musical Hell’s Kitchen to premiere in New York

A new musical featuring the songs of Alicia Keys is to make its premiere in New York.

Titled Hell’s Kitchen, a synopsis of the new show says it “tells the story of Ali, a young girl growing up in NYC’s Hell’s Kitchen in the 1990s.”

The musical has a book by Kristoffer Diaz with choreography by Camille A. Brown and musical direction by Adam Blackstone and Erskine Hawkins.

The premiere production will run from 27 October – 10 December 2023 at the off-Broadway The Public Theater. It is being directed by Michael Greif who previously helmed Rent, Next To Normal and Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway.

In a cramped apartment hanging off the side of Times Square, 17-year-old Ali is desperate to get her piece of the New York dream. Ali’s mother is just as determined to protect her daughter from the same mistakes she made.

When Ali falls for a talented young drummer, both mother and daughter must face hard truths about race, defiance, and growing up. Ali feels trapped, until the sound of a neighbor playing piano opens the door to an unexpected friendship and a radically different future.

Shoshana Bean features in the cast with the company made up of Chad Carstarphen, Reid Clarke, Chloe Davis, Nico DeJesus, Brandon Victor Dixon, Timothy L. Edwards, Badia Farha , Vanessa Ferguson, Crystal Monee Hall, Gianna Harris, Chris Lee, Jackie Leon, Kecia Lewis, Raechelle Manalo, Maleah Joi Moon, Onyxx Noel, Sarah Parker, William Roberson, Niki Saludez, Mariand Torres, Donna Vivino, and Lamont Walker II.
