Acclaimed play My Beautiful Laundrette is heading out on a new UK tour.
Curve’s production of Hanif Kureishi’s piece will open in Leicester before visiting venues across the UK in 2024.
Located in the tumultuous setting of London during the Thatcher era, My Beautiful Laundrette unfolds the tale of Omar, a young British Pakistani man, who breathes new life into his uncle’s dilapidated laundry business. Following an aggressive encounter with a gang espousing racist views, Omar forges an unexpected romantic bond with Johnny, a former schoolmate and a member of a fascist skinhead group.
The narrative blooms amidst the stark realities of racial strife, burgeoning nationalism, spiraling inflation, economic downturn, and political instability. In this environment, the romance between Omar and Johnny takes root as they collaborate to revitalize the South London laundrette.
