The Wiz to return to Broadway with brand new production

A new revival of The Wiz is to open on Broadway in 2024.

The new production will be directed by Schele Williams and choreographed by Jaquel Knight.

It will play a national tour across the US before a Broadway bow in Spring 2024. A theatre and dates are to be announced.

The Wiz is a musical retelling of L. Frank Baum’s children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and first opened on Broadway in 1975.

The show features a book by William F Brow with songs from Charlie Smalls, Timothy Graphenreed, Harold Wheeler, George Faison, Zachary Walzer and Luther Vandross.

Amber Ruffin will provide additional material to the new revival which will be cast by Tara Rubin Casting.

Williams said: “I wouldn’t be on Broadway if it wasn’t for The Wiz. The music, the costumes, the choreography, and Stephanie Mills! Seeing that show changed my life. It is, in every way, a celebration of Black excellence. I am honoured to helm this production, and I can’t think of a better time to tell this story.”
