A Come From Away film adaptation is in the works

Work on a movie adaptation of musical Come From Away is well underway, its creators have confirmed.

Husband and wife team Irene Sankoff and David Hein have revealed a first draft of the film has been written

“We’ve turned in a draft of the “Come From Away” movie, that’s exciting,” they told The Star.

News of the screen adaption was first revealed last year, with Sankoff and Hein saying they wanted to cast “regular people”.

Sankoff told The Daily Beast: “We don’t want Hollywood celebrities in it because we don’t want the audience to be taken out of the moment. We want it to be regular people.”

Hein added: “The real dream cast will be the people of Gander, who I hope will be extras.”

Come From Away shares the touching real-life story of the 7,000 air passengers from all over the world who were grounded in Canada during the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks, and the small Newfoundland community that invited these ‘come from aways’ into their lives.

With a score and book written by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away proved a huge hit on Broadway before transferring to the West End at the start of 2019.
