A Hocus Pocus musical could be coming to Broadway

Disney film Hocus Pocus could be heading to the stage with a musical adaptation.

Director of the original film Kenny Ortega, who also directed Newsies and the High School Musical series, has said he’d love to take the 1993 movie to Broadway.

In an interview with Forbes, Ortega said: “I’d love to do Hocus Pocus on Broadway. Perhaps Thomas Schumacher, the president of Disney Theatrical Group, would give me a call, and we could talk about it. He’s a great man, and he’s done an incredible amount of amazing theater work with the Disney company.

“They put out High School Musical, not as a Broadway production, but toured it all over very successfully on ice and in theaters across America.

“I mean, look at the success of Newsies, which won Tony Awards for Alan Menken as well as for the choreography.”

He added: “I think a Hocus Pocus musical would be great fun, really great fun.”

Starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker, the original film followed a coven of witches who are resurrected on Halloween by a teenage boy in Salem, Massachusetts.

While not originally a huge hit at the box office, over the years the film has become a cult hit with a large fanbase.

Away from a potential musical adaptation, a film sequel directed by Adam Shankman and written by Jen D’Angelo is set for Disney+.
