A Smash musical is officially heading for Broadway
Musical TV series Smash is one step closer to Broadway after a first workshop!
The show, which debuted on US TV network NBC in 2012, is heading to Broadway with producers Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt and Neil Meron.
Inspired by the series – which starred Debra Messing, Christian Borle, Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee – Smash: A New Musical will tell the story of fictitious Marilyn Monroe based musical Bombshell.
Characters Julia, Tom, Ivy and Karen will all appear although exact details of the plot are yet to be confirmed.
Music will come from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who wrote the songs for the TV series, with a book co-written by Bob Martin and Rick Elice and choreography by Joshua Bergasse.
Susan Stroman will direct the production, which is slated to arrive in New York for the 2024/2025 Broadway season.
Shaiman revealed recently that a first workshop recently took place featuring Brooks Ashmanskas, Beth Leavel, Daniel Breaker, Krysta Rodriguez, Nicholas Rodriguez, Kristine Nielsen, Christian Thompson, Maddie Baillio, Bonnie Milligan and, yes, Megan Hilty.
Sharing that new songs had been written for the stage adaptation, he teased: “We have no concrete plans yet, this was just the first reading, but I think I can safely say that, unless the world ends soon, you really will get to see SMASH on Broadway sooner than later!”
Spielberg, who served as an executive producer on the TV series, said previously of plans to bring the show to the stage: “I am personally thrilled to be a part of this musical and its road to Broadway.
“Smash is near and dear to my heart, and it seems fitting that a new musical inspired by what we did on the show would eventually come to the stage.”
Meanwhile McPhee has put herself forward to reprise her role of Karen on the stage.
She told Broadway.com in a 2020 interview: “I’ll be there with my 16-bars, I’m ready to audition.
“The fans are going to go wild—this makes me really happy. I’m thinking about the whole cast’s reaction to this: they’re going to be so excited. It’s going to be the best opening night ever!”
