A Thelma and Louise stage musical is in the works

A stage musical based on 1991 movie Thelma and Louise is currently in development.

The movie’s original screenwriter Callie Khouri has revealed plans to adapt her Oscar-winning script for the stage.

The Hollywood Reporter says that work is currently in the “very early stages” but the project already has director Trip Cullman attached with Halley Feiffer set to pen the book with original songs from singer-songwriter Neko Case.

Although exact details are being kept under wraps, Khouri said the musical would be a reimagining of the film’s original story.

She told the publication: “It’s a completely different animal. We’ve got a book and we’ve got music but because of the pandemic, we all haven’t been together in a very, very long time.

“So, it’s still in its nascent stages, but it’s very promising. I don’t want to say too much about it.”

The original movie starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon as the titular characters, two friends who set out on a road trip which ends up with them on the run from the police.

A critical and commercial hit, the movie received six Oscar nominations and eight BAFTA nods.
