Anna Popplewell to make theatrical debut in queer adaptation of Hedda Gabler

Anna Popplewell is to make her theatrical debut in a new adaptation of Ibsen classic Hedda Gabler.

Harriet Madeley’s queer take on the piece will run at Reading Rep from 22 February – 11 March 2023.

Anna Popplewell, best known for playing the role of Susan Pevensie in Disney’s The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, will make her theatrical debut starring in the title role.

Popplewell will be joined by Mark Desebrock as George, Ryan Gerald as Brack, Natalie Perera as Thea and Jessica Temple as Isla.

A version steeped in queerness, repression and suburban monotony, exploring how the most famous female character of all time is trapped within a life chosen for her.

Witness the unravelling of a friendship group, as the line between truth and lie is ever blurred, and secrets burst themselves into the open.

The production is co-produced by A Girl Called Stephen and will be directed by A Girl Called Stephen’s Artistic Director and co-founder Annie Kershaw.

Alongside Kershaw on the creative team will be Amy Watts (A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Reading Rep) as Designer, Jamie Lu (Tokyo Rose – Southwark Playhouse) as Sound Designer, Murong Li (Choking Game – Omnibus Theatre) as Lighting Designer, Fran Levin (The Pirate Queen – London Coliseum) as Costume Supervisor and Rose Burston (Jekyll & Hyde – Reading Rep) as Stage Manager.
