Be More Chill is returning to London with a run in the West End – here’s all you need to know.

The musical, based on the novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini, recently played Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre.

Featuring music and lyrics by Joe Iconis and a book by Joe Tracz, the show will return to London for a limited season at the Shaftesbury Theatre between 30 June and 5 September.

A synopsis for the show reads:

What if popularity came in a pill? Would you take it, no questions asked? In Be More Chill, achieving that elusive “perfect life” is now possible thanks to some mysterious new technology-but it comes at a cost that’s not as easy to swallow. What could possibly go wrong?

Blending the contemporary with retro sci-fi, this thrillingly exciting, comically subversive, and deeply felt new musical takes on the competing voices in all of our heads. And ultimately proves, there’s never been a better time in history to be yourself-especially if you’re a loser…geek…or whatever.

The running time for the show is 2 hours 30 minutes (including interval).

Be More Chill London cast

The lead roles of Jeremy Heere will be played by Scott Folan (Mother of Him at Park Theatre & Damned By Despair) and Michael Mell by Blake Patrick Anderson (Closer to Heaven & Starlight Express).

Two former Six Queens join the Be More Chill company in the shape of Renee Lamb and Millie O’Connell as Jenna Rolan and Chloe Valentine respectively.

Further cast are Miracle Chance as Christine Canigula, Stewart Clarke as The Squip, Eloise Davies as Brooke Lohst, Christopher Fry as Mr Heere, Mr Reyes + Others, James Hameed as Rich Goranski and Miles Paloma as Jake Dillinger.

Completing the company are understudies Eve Norris and Gabriel Hinchliffe.

The Broadway production, which featured Will Roland and George Salazar, was nominated for Best Original Score at the 2019 Tony Awards and picked up 8 Drama Desk Award nominations and four Outer Critics Circle Awards nominations.

Be More Chill was running at The Other Palace in 2020 before the theatre shutdown.

Much of the musical’s success has been driven by word of mouth and social media.

Be More Chill’s producer Jerry Goehring told BBC News: “I’m a little older and so I’m used to word-of-mouth being telling my friends about an amazing show or movie. And in the old days we had radio that would play a song and it would be popular. Word of mouth would happen in different ways.

“Well today, clearly it happens online. When I first heard about this show from Joe Iconis, there was something like 10 million streams of a CD that had just been released. Now fast forward to the off-Broadway run, and suddenly there were 100 million streams, and now we’re well over 300 million streams.”
