Broadway’s top grossing shows of 2023 revealed
The biggest shows of Broadway in 2023 have been revealed in a record-breaking year.
Leading the charge is The Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre, grossing a staggering $120,308,159. With an average gross of $2,269,965 and the highest average top ticket price at $599, this show has clearly resonated with audiences, selling 96.66% of its total seats across 429 performances.
Not far behind is the perennial favourite, Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, amassing $101,996,254 with a remarkable 100.55% seat occupancy. This indicates that the show not only sold out its entire seating capacity but also additional standing tickets. Hamilton also boasted a high average top ticket price of $549.
Wicked at the Gershwin Theatre also made a strong showing, generating $101,004,714 in gross revenue. With an average ticket price of $131, the show has proven to be both accessible and immensely popular, selling 96.14% of its seats.
The Neil Simon Theatre’s MJ The Musical followed with an impressive $87,438,804 gross, while Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theatre delighted audiences, grossing $77,867,087 with 95.65% of its seats sold.
A notable entry in the list is Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, which garnered $75,205,872 in grosses having only opened part-way through the year.
Other top performers included Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Lyric Theatre, Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, and & Juliet at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, each pulling in strong figures both in total gross and average ticket prices.
The Phantom of the Opera at the Majestic Theatre completes the top 15, grossing a total of $44,063,716 in the lead up to its closing in April.
