Cyrano musical film adaption to star Peter Dinklage and Haley Bennett

A film adaption of off-Broadway musical Cyrano is to star Peter Dinklage.

MGM has acquired the rights to the big screen version of the show, which was adapted by Erica Schmidt from Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play Cyrano de Bergerac.

Schmidt will return to write the script for the film which will be directed by Joe Wright, Deadline reports.

The piece features music and lyrics by The National’s Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner and Matt Berninger together with Carin Besser.

Peter Dinklage will reprise his role of Cyrano de Bergerac having previously starred in both the Off-Broadway production and its try out at the Goodspeed Opera House.

Haley Bennett will play Roxanne with further casting including Brian Tyree Henry and Ben Mendelsohn.

Further cast and a release date are to be confirmed.

Cyrano de Bergerac tells the story of the titular character’s love for a woman called Roxanne and fears that he is too ugly for her to feel the same way. When his handsome but inarticulate friend Christian reveals similar feelings, Cyrano finds a way to express his love indirectly as he writes letters under Christian’s name.
