Disney working on musical adaption of Hidden Figures

Disney is working on a musical adaption of 2016 film Hidden Figures.

Based on the book of the same name, the movie tells the story of three Black mathematicians – Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson – who worked at NASA during the space race.

Schele Williams is set to direct the show, saying this week: “It is a musical. It is going to be produced by Disney Theatrical. It is a dream come true.

“It is in development, and we are very excited.”

She shared with Broadway.com: “I have a long history with Disney, and Tom Schumacher specifically. During the development of Aida, we talked about stories that resonated with me.

“Amplifying stories about the extraordinary accomplishments of Black women are at the top of my list. Now that I am a mother, I think about the impact the art I make is going to have on my girls. I could not think of a show that is more connected to my passion and purpose. I could not feel more honoured.”

Williams described the project as in its “early stages” with the author of the book, Margot Lee Shetterly involved.

The 2016 film starred Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe (pictured above) with Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst and Jim Parsons.

It was a box office and critical hit, with Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Spencer.

The New York Times previously reported that Disney has been developing a stage adaption since 2018 with film critic Elvis Mitchell on board as a creative consultant.
