First look at Passion at Hope Mill Theatre with Ruthie Henshall
Here’s a very first look at the new reimagined production of musical Passion at Hope Mill Theatre.
The new production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s work opens this week at the Manchester venue, running to 5 June 2022.
Directed by Michael Strassen, Olivier Award winner and Musical Theatre icon Ruthie Henshall (Les Miserables; Miss Saigon; Oliver; Crazy For You; Chicago; Billy Elliot) leads the cast for the limited run.
Joining her are Dean John-Wilson (Steven Spielberg’s Masters of Air, Apple TV; Aladdin) as Giorgio, the man who finds himself at the heart of a passionate love affair, alongside Olivier nominated Kelly Price (What’s New Pussycat?, Birmingham REP; A Little Night Music, Menier Chocolate Factory and Garrick Theatre) as Clara.
The company is completed by Adam Robert Lewis, Charlie Waddell, Danny Whitehead, Dalton Harris, Ray Shell, Steve Watts and Tim Walton.
It is Italy in 1863, a country tired from civil war where we meet our heroine, Fosca; her fragile, raw nerves inflame her melancholic ills. Fosca is a love starved woman whose shredding raw nerves are about to thin to breaking point with the arrival of a sexy, handsome new soldier, Giorgio, but the dashing, chiseled Captain has a dark secret … he is stuck in an illicit, passionately clandestine affair in Milan with Clara – a beguiling beauty and a married woman with a child.
This is only the foundation for this roller coaster ride of dramatic emotion … this explicit Passionate expose of how love smashes disparate lives and changes everything. Forever.
The creative team is completed by movement direction by Sundeep Saini (As You Like It, Little Shop of Horrors) and musical direction by Yshani Perinpanayagam (LMTO), this encapsulating revival will reenergise the tale of love, sex and obsession.
