Planned Into The Woods revival at The Old Vic in 2022 cancelled

A revival of Into the Woods planned to play The Old Vic in 2022 has been cancelled.

The iconic musical was due to run at the London venue between 16 April to 9 July 2022.

Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam and Leah Hausman were previously announced to co-direct the revival.

Exact reasons why the show has been pulled have not been revealed.

In a statement, the venue said: “The Old Vic and co-producers Scenario Two have mutually agreed that the production of Into the Woods, scheduled for spring 2022, will not take place at The Old Vic.

“All ticket bookers will be contacted directly. The Old Vic wishes the show well for its future life.”

Into The Woods puts a spin on the classic Brothers Grimm fairytales with music and lyrics from Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine.

The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse.

Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

The Old Vic’s executive director Kate Varah previously told WhatsOnStage of the planned production: “Into the Woods was something we’d been talking about for many, many years, with Matthew Warchus (artistic director) being a massive Sondheim devotee.

“He wanted to make sure we had a Sondheim show at the Old Vic at some point during his tenure. So it’s been an exciting long-running project.”
