Lucie Jones auditioned for Wicked 11 times before landing dream role of Elphaba

Lucie Jones has revealed she auditioned for Wicked eleven times before landing her dream role as Elphaba.

The West End star, who is currently appearing in Waitress on tour, will join the cast of Wicked in London from February.

In an interview with The Stage, Lucie shared she had auditioned for the role 11 times in ten years.

“Persistence is key, my friend…” she told the publication before admitting to being “terrified” about taking on the iconic role.

Lucie paid tribute to late acting coach Dee Cannon for helping her secure the part.

Lucie explained: “I don’t think I was ready when I auditioned before, but I think I’ve matured a lot over the last few years, thanks to the support of people like Dee Cannon.

“Dee worked on Wicked material with me many times. I wouldn’t have got the part if it wasn’t for her. She passed away last year, but I feel I’ve got her with me going forward. We, her students, are her legacy now.”

As well as Waitress, Lucie’s stage credits include leading roles in RENT, Legally Blonde and Les Misérables.

Before going green, she’ll be staging her own Christmas concerts in December in London and Cardiff, taking to the stage to perform her favourite showtunes and classic Christmas hits.

Lucie said previously of the gigs: “I have been very fortunate to play some amazing roles across the UK and in the West End, and to now be planning a very special Christmas show and to be stepping out on stage as me – Lucie, is very exciting.

“I love the festive season, so sharing my favourite songs with fans at this most wonderful time will be very special indeed.”

Lucie’s run in Wicked will begin on 1 February 2022 as part of a new cast.
