Moulin Rouge! musical in West End will make masks mandatory for audience members

Moulin Rouge! The Musical in the West End will require audience members to wear masks.

The production is understood to be the first West End show to make masks a condition of entry – while other venues encourage mask use it’s ultimately left up to individuals to choose to comply.

In a statement to The Stage, a spokesperson for the show said: “Ambassadors Theatre Group and the producers of Moulin Rouge! The Musical are asking all audience members to wear masks when attending performances at the Piccadilly Theatre, in order to keep the production company and audiences safe.

“This policy will be reviewed on an ongoing basis,” they added.

Alongside mask use, entry will require ticket holders to provide evidence of either vaccination, a negative Covid test or proof of natural immunity.

Based on the iconic film of the same name, Moulin Rouge! The Musical will begin performances at Piccadilly Theatre on 12 November 2021 with tickets on sale now here.

Casting for Moulin Rouge! The Musical was previously announced with Liisi LaFontaine starring as Satine and Jamie Bogyo set to play Christian.

They’re joined on the cast by Elia Lo Tauro as Santiago, Sophie Carmen Jones as Nini, Simon Bailey as the Duke, Jason Pennycooke as Toulouse Lautrec, Johnny Bishop as Baby Doll, Zoe Birkett as Arabia, Timmika Ramsay as La Chocolat and Clive Carter as Harold Zidler.

The stage version is directed by Alex Timbers with choreography by Sonya Tayeh and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine.
