New musical Fun at the Beach Romp-Bomp-a-Lomp!! to make premiere in London
New musical Fun at the Beach Romp-Bomp-a-Lomp!! is to make its world première at Southwark Playhouse Borough.
The show, by Brandon Lambert and Martin Landry and directed by Mark Bell (The Play That Goes Wrong) offers a loving parody of American beach movies spanning decades.
Previews begin on 24 May, running at the London venue to 22 June.
Set against the backdrop of a sunny beach day, Fun at the Beach Romp-Bomp-a-Lomp!! revolves around a legendary competition that promises fame, love, and a touch of peril. With a crown at stake, the characters are thrust into a series of hilariously dangerous beach events, all while parodying iconic retro hits in a musical spectacle that’s been described as ‘Grease meets Squid Game’.
Making up the cast are Bradley Adams (Ensemble), Tom Babbage (Joe), Ellie Clayton (Mary Joe), Damien James (Dickie), Janice Landry (Chastity), Dixie Newman (Ensemble), Katie Oxman (Chickie) and Jack Whittle (Dude).
Martin Landry said: “Fun at the Beach Romp-Bomp-a-Lomp!! was born in 2018, when I witnessed my co-writer, Brandon Lambert, performing in a jukebox musical (which shall remain unnamed). The music was so much fun and completely irresistible, but the story was staggeringly painful.
“After the show (and after a few drinks to ease our distress), we asked ourselves a seemingly impossible question: what if we wrote something even worse? And now, here we are! We hope you enjoy Fun at the Beach Romp-Bomp-a-Lomp!!”
The production has set and costume design by Emily Bestow, sound design by Andy Graham, choreography by Francesca Jaynes and lighting design by Adam King.
