New musical Glory Ride to make world premiere at London’s Charring Cross Theatre
New musical Glory Ride will make its fully staged world premiere at London’s Charring Cross Theatre this spring.
The piece, which has a book, music and lyrics by Victoria & Todd Buchholz, will run at the venue from 22 April – 29 July 2023.
Directed by Kelly Devine, the show is based on an amazing, true story from the Second World War.
This first production follows semi-staged concerts at The Other Palace last year.
Gino Bartali, Tour de France winner and one of the most beloved Italian athletes of all time, had a secret life.
With his cycling career as a cover, Bartali cycled thousands of miles between cities across Italy. Hidden in the frame of his bike were falsified identity cards and other secret documents to help victims of the Second World War cross borders to safety from Mussolini’s fascist regime. His efforts saved hundreds of persecuted Jews and other refugees, many of whom were children.
Bartali was a local hero as well as a national figurehead, renowned in his community for his unwavering commitment to helping others. His story has a powerful message for audiences today about bravery, loyalty and doing the right thing regardless of the consequences.
The cast will feature Josh St Clair, Amy Di Bartolomeo and Fed Zanni with Daniel Robinson, Ruairidh McDonald, Ryan Bennett, Peter Watts, Jamie Coyne, Loris Scarpa, Susianna Paisio and Steve Watts.
The production will feature musical direction from Dave Rose, designs by PJ McEvoy and casting by Harry Blumenau CDG with Italian cultural adviser Federico Bellone.
