Original London production of Les Misérables plays final performance

The original London production of Les Misérables gave its final performance last night, Saturday July 13.

Les Misérables has been playing for 34 years in the West End but will take a short break this summer.

The current home of the award winning musical – the Queen’s Theatre – is being refurbished.

When it re-opens in December as the Sondheim Theatre, it’ll be home to a brand new production of the musical – without its famous revolve.

Many current and past cast members have taken to social media to bid the original production goodbye.

Michael Ball, who originated the role of Marius in the London company, said: “‘There’s a grief that can’t be spoken….’. goodbye to the original @lesmisofficial and thank you. So proud to have been there at the start. Such an important part of my life.”

Current Jenna in Waitress Lucie Jones wrote: “My 1st professional acting job was as Cosette in @lesmisofficial I will be eternally grateful to this beautiful show, its creators & all who worked at the Queens theatre for every single day I spent there. Enjoy that final spin on the revolve & best of luck to the new company! ??”

Samantha Barks, who starred as Éponine both in the West End and in the musical’s 2012 movie adaption, shared: “Wow the final day of the original Les Miserables production in London and it’s sent me down a road of nostalgia this morning.

“There will never be a job as special to me as that one. I started when I was 18 and grew into an adult with that show, learning so much about life, love and friendship! I made friends that 10 years later I still consider some of my best friends! Eponine I am so grateful for you for teaching me so much. ”

Other West End productions also shared tributes, including the cast of Hamilton and Phantom of the Opera.

While work on the Queen’s theatre is underway, the musical will continue to play with a special staged concert version at the Gielgud Theatre.

The 2019 Les Mis concert in London is based on the legendary concerts 10th anniversary concert at The Royal Albert Hall and the O2 Arena’s 25th anniversary concert.

The 2019 concert version of Les Miserable in London comprises of an All Star cast, featuring Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, Matt Lucas and Carrie Hope Fletcher, leading an orchestra of more than 65 musicians.
