Alex Newell to star in Pippin concert in London’s West End
Alex Newell will star in a 50th anniversary concert production of Pippin in London’s West End.
Tony Award-winning Broadway star of Shucked, Grammy nominated Alex Newell will lead the cast at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 29 – 30 April. Tickets are on sale now here.
Patricia Hodge, Lucie Jones, Cedric Neal, Zizi Strallen and Jac Yarrow will co-star.
With an unforgettable soundtrack by the four-time Grammy winner, three-time Oscar winner, and musical theatre legend Stephen Schwartz, featuring timeless tracks like Corner of the Sky and Magic to Do, Pippin delves into the journey of self-discovery of a man on a quest to find his identity, place, and purpose in life.
The story follows Pippin, the heir to the Frankish throne, as he embarks on a quest for the secret to true happiness and fulfilment. His search takes him through the exhilaration of battle, the allure of sensual pleasures, and the machinations of political power, including the overthrow of his father, King Charlemagne the Great.
Ultimately, Pippin discovers that true contentment doesn’t come from grand achievements but from the simple, everyday moments.
Stephen Schwartz said: “Although there have been some excellent recent productions of Pippin in the UK, the show never gets to be heard with a full live orchestra and choir.
“This concert, with a cast led by the astonishing Alex Newell and produced under the always first-rate auspices of Katy Lipson’s Aria Entertainment and Carter Dixon McGill, promises to be a once-in-a-blue-moon event. I for one cannot wait to experience it!”
The musical first premiered on Broadway in 1972 where it won four Tony Awards, before a West End production a year later.
