Rachel Zegler, Cynthia Erivo, Ben Platt, Leslie Odom Jr. to pay tribute to Stephen Sondheim at Grammys
A host of musical stars will pay tribute to the late Stephen Sondheim with a special Grammys performance.
Rachel Zegler, Cynthia Erivo, Ben Platt, Leslie Odom Jr. will perform in memory of the iconic theatre composer at the Grammy Awards ceremony on 3 April.
Exact details about the performance are under wraps but Zegler – who recently led the cast of West Side Story’s new movie – shared to Twitter: “i’m taking the stage at the #GRAMMYs april 3 on @CBS! you won’t want to miss our performance on music’s biggest night. with great love to steve, always and forever. @RecordingAcad”
Sondheim passed away in November 2021, aged 91.
The multi-award winning composer-lyricist penned scores for countless iconic musicals including Company, Follies, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods, as well as writing the lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy.
Together with eight Grammy Awards, his accolades included a total of nine Tony Awards, an Oscar, Olivier and Pulitzer Prize.
The 2022 Grammy Awards will be hosted in Las Vegas on 3 April.
Other confirmed performers include BTS, Brandi Carlile, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X with Jack Harlow, Olivia Rodrigo, Jon Batiste, Foo Fighters and H.E.R.
Closer to the UK, an all star Stephen Sondheim celebration concert will take place in the West End this May.
Sondheim’s Old Friends will take place at the Sondheim Theatre in London on Tuesday 3 May 2022 In aid of the Sondheim Foundation.
It will feature appearances from the likes of Michael Ball, Petula Clark, Judi Dench, Daniel Evans, Bonnie Langford, Adrian Lester, Damien Lewis, Julia McKenzie, Elaine Paige, Bernadette Peters, Clive Rowe, Imelda Staunton and Hannah Waddingham.
