The Prince of Egypt London reviews
WhatsOnStage – 4/5
“Anyone who fell in love with the animated DreamWorks classic in the last 20 years (as this critic very much did) will not leave disappointed – much in the same way that Disney’s Aladdin or The Lion King musicals are often an ode to their silver screen counterparts. It may not work miracles, but as a stage version of an animated classic, The Prince of Egypt delivers in spades.” – Read the full review
The Telegraph – 3/5
“Schwartz’s score – weaving various appropriate Middle Eastern influences together – comes into its own in a rash of blistering bible-belters in the second half. I wasn’t so much converted as bludgeoned into a state of admiration by the heavenly host of rousing choruses. And that’s no small feat.” – Read the full review
The Stage – 3/5
“Inconsistent stage adaptation of the animated film that boasts a great score by Stephen Schwartz but lacks atmosphere and magic.” – Read the full review
The Guardian – 2/5
“The Prince of Egypt is at its strongest as a dance production with beautiful visual formations through bodywork when chariots, wells or rolling desert sands are created by groups of dancers. It is in Sean Cheesman’s astonishing choreography that this musical feels at its most alive.” – Read the full review
The Times – 2/5
“It’s not every day that you see the Red Sea parted on a West End stage, but this is one of those big-budget musicals that is oddly lacking in interesting music.” – Read the full review
London Evening Standard – 1/5
“This biblical epic is an epic fail. A beefed up musical version of the indifferent 1998 DreamWorks animation about the life of Moses, it’s simultaneously pompous and simplistic.” – Read the full review
