The most streamed cast albums of the decade revealed

The ten biggest cast recording albums of the decade have been revealed.

Compiled by data from The Nielson Company (via Playbill), the rundown highlights the most streamed cast albums of the past 10 years.

The top 10 includes not only some of the West End and Broadway’s biggest shows but also recordings from some of the newest productions which have only been released in the past twelve months.

10. The Book of Mormon (147 million streams)
Premiering in 2011 on Broadway where it is currently still running alongside West End and UK tour productions, The Book of Mormon is the award-winning Broadway Musical from the creators of South Park Trey Parker and Matt Stone together with the composer of Avenue Q, Robert Lopez.

9. In The Heights (149 million streams)
Gearing up for a movie adaption in 2020, In The Heights is the Tony and Olivier Award winning with a score from Lin-Manuel Miranda. Set in New York’s largely Hispanic-American neighbourhood of Washington Heights, the musical follows a number of residents over the course of three days as they discover what it means to be home.

8. Beetlejuice (152 million streams)
An adaption of the 1988 film of the same name, Beetlejuice premiered on Broadway in 2019 with its score by Australian singer-songwriter Eddie Perfect becoming a huge hit on social media.

7. Les Misérables (185 million streams)
The oldest musical on the list, Les Misérables first premiered in the West End in 1985 and recently started performances at the newly refurbished Sondheim Theatre. Adapted from Victor Hugo’s novel, Les Misérables shares the epic tale of a man’s life journey through 18th century France and his struggle to live through the injustice and revolution of the time.

6. Waitress (188 million streams)
Based on the film of the same name, Waitress tells the story of Jenna a waitress and expert pie-maker who dreams of a way out of her small town and rocky marriage. The musical features a Tony and Grammy nominated score by Sara Bareilles.

5. The Lion King (212 million streams)
Disney’s stage adaption of its hit animated film recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in London’s West End. Exploding with glorious colours, stunning effects and enchanting music, it tells the timeless story of Simba and his epic journey to fulfil his destiny as King of the Pridelands.

4. Be More Chill (265 million streams)
Be More Chill, based on the novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini with music and lyrics by Joe Iconis, premiered on Broadway in 2019 after Off-Broadway and regional productions. The London premiere will take place in 2020 at The Other Palace.

3. Wicked (390 million streams)
Wicked tells the magical tale reveals the ‘true untold story’ behind the Wizard Of Oz and just what happened before Dorothy dropped in. With a score by Stephen Schwartz, the show has been running on both Broadway and the West End for more than a decade.

2. Dear Evan Hansen (543 million streams)
With a score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of socially awkward teenager Evan. In his last year of high school and with only one person he considers a friend, an assignment from his therapist leads to a misunderstanding that casts him in the centre of a tragedy.

1. Hamilton (4,382 million streams)
It’s little surprise to find Lin-Manuel Miranda’s record breaking, award-winning smash hit, Hamilton at Number 1. The musical, currently running in both London and New York, tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.
