Explaining the decision to split the movie in two, director Chu said: “Thank you for all the support these past several months in anticipation of the WICKED movie. We have so many exciting things to share but for now I’m giving you one… or two, rather.

“Here’s what happened: as we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into a single film without doing some real damage to it. As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years.

“So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one WICKED movie but TWO!!!! With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters.”

Who’s on the cast

Alongside Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the Wicked movie cast will feature Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard Of Oz, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible.

Also confirmed to appear are Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric and Colin Michael Carmichael.

Based on 1995 Gregory Maguire novel, Wicked reveals the ‘true untold story’ behind the Wizard Of Oz and just what happened before Dorothy dropped in.

The musical first opened on Broadway in 2003 before a West End production in 2006 with both continuing to play to sell out audiences.

Meanwhile you can currently see Wicked on stage near you on its UK tour.
