A brand new production of Dear Evan Hansen is coming to the stage

A new production of Dear Evan Hansen is set to be staged in Australia next year.

With a score written by Dogfight and The Greatest Showman songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and a book by Steven Levenson, Dear Evan Hansen proved a huge hit on Broadway and in the West End.

The Olivier and Tony Award winning show was turned into a big screen movie in 2021, with Ben Platt (controversially) reprising his title role from the Broadway production.

Now the Sydney Theatre Company (STC) and Michael Cassel Group are set to bring the show back to the stage.

Dean Bryant will direct the production which will be the musical’s first original production since its debut on Broadway.

STC’s artistic director Kip Williams said: “It is an instant classic, so this is pretty thrilling.

“And aside from the fact that it is filled with these incredible pop bangers, I hope it will bring young audiences in, many of whom will be having their first professional theatre experience. I’m really excited about that.”

Dear Evan Hansen is the raw, moving and inspiring story of a socially anxious highschooler who is suddenly thrust into the spotlight when he inadvertently invents an important role for himself at the centre of a local tragedy.

The production runs from 12 October – 17 November 2024 with cast and full creatives to be announced.
