An official Steps musical is in the works

An official musical based on the songs of Steps is in the works.

The band have spilled that the five piece are working on their own stage show.

Formed in 1997, pop group Steps had a string of hits in the 1990s and 00s including ‘5, 6, 7, 8’, ‘Tragedy’, ‘One for Sorrow’ and a cover of Diana Ross’ ‘Chain Reaction’.

Ian ‘H’ Watkins shared: “We’ve been talking about it for years – the Steps musical.

“It’s just the perfect pop progression of telling a story through our songs. There are cogs turning.”

Claire Richards added in an interview with Attitude magazine: “We’ve talked about it among ourselves very seriously.”

Lisa Scott-Lee first confirmed news of the musical project last year in an interview with 98FM’s Big Breakfast with Rebecca and Brendan.

Speaking in September 2020, Scott-Lee denied rumours that the group was involved in a musical that would use the songs of Steps to tell the story of Princess Diana’s life was in the works, supposedly titled ‘One For Sorrow’.

“We are aware of [One For Sorrow] but I can confirm that Steps are not affiliated with that musical. It’s nothing to do with us, to be honest,” she said.

Scott-Lee went on: “The reason we are not affiliated with that one is because we are working on our own. We have been for a while before we saw this poster. I think it’s important for people to know we aren’t endorsing that one.

“We’ve always said if we were going to do a musical we would want to endorse it. It’s our music, we are the ones who have been singing it for 23 years.

“We love Steps so we want it to be done in the right way.”

No other information about the musical was provided so for now, watch this space!

Steps recently reunited to release their seventh studio album What the Future Holds Pt. 2, which was released in September.
