Beetlejuice the Musical to close on Broadway amid rumours of West End transfer

Beetlejuice the Musical is to close on Broadway in January, it’s been announced.

Adapted from the 1988 film of the same name, Beetlejuice the musical originally opened at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York in 2019 where it was nominated for eight Tony Awards.

After being forced to close prematurely in March 2020 amid the pandemic, the show reopened in April, this time at the Marriott Marquis Theatre.

Now producers have announced that the show will cease haunting Broadway in the new year, playing its final performance on 8 January 2023.

Across its two Broadway runs the show will have played almost 700 performances at the time of closing.

Alex Brightman currently stars in the title role with Elizabeth Teeter as Lydia Deetz. They’re joined by David Josefsberg, Kerry Butler, Leslie Kritzer and Adam Dannheisser.

Beetlejuice The Musical features a score by Eddie Perfect with a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King, direction by Alex Timbers and scenic design by David Korins.

It tells the story of ‘bio-exorcist’ Betelgeuse (pronounced Beetlejuice) who attempts to help a recently deceased couple to haunt the family now living in their former home.

An original cast recording is available to stream, download or buy on CD and Vinyl here.

There’s been rumours of a West End production of Beetlejuice set for 2023 but as of writing nothing has been officially announced.

Meanwhile a US tour is scheduled to begin performances later this year.
