Bristol Old Vic’s Hamlet to broadcast in cinemas from April

Bristol Old Vic’s production of Hamlet is to be made available to watch in cinemas.

Following in-person performances and online broadcasts, the piece will come to cinema screens across the UK & Ireland for the first time from 6 April 2023.

Leading the cast of John Haidar’s production are Billy Howle as Hamlet, Niamh Cusack as Gertrude and Mirren Mack as Ophelia.

Joining them are Finbar Lynch as Claudius, Taheen Modak as Laertes/Rosencrantz, Isabel Adomakoh Young as Horatio, Firdous Bamji as Ghost/Player King/Gravedigger, Jason Barnett as Polonius and Catrin Stewart as Guildenstern/Reynaldo/Player Queen.

Hamlet‘s father is dead. His mother has remarried. He is alone with his thoughts. Then, he speaks.

Haunted by grief, and with his world spinning violently out of control, Hamlet has to make some decisions: forget or remember; live or die.

Charlotte Geeves, Bristol Old Vic’s Executive Director said: “When Hamlet was first performed on our stage, it blew audiences away with its visceral, filmic quality. This bold, contemporary adaptation opened up Shakespeare’s most well-known play to a whole new generation and now, thanks to Bristol Old Vic On Screen we are able to ‘bottle’ this unique production in 4K cinema quality and share with people from across the UK and beyond. The opportunity to share our first digital theatre production to a cinema audience is only possible due to our new partnership with Altitude and their own innovative approach to filmed events.”

Lia Devlin, Managing Director, Altitude Film Distribution added: “We are thrilled to be building on Altitude’s cinema offering this year with the Bristol Old Vic’s brilliant production of Hamlet. John Haidar and the team have contemporised Hamlet in such a stunning way that appeals to new young audiences as well as the traditional and we are excited to bring this fresh production to cinema audiences around the UK and Ireland this April. They are in for a real treat!”
