Disney officially confirms a third Frozen movie is in the works

Disney has officially confirmed it is working on a third Frozen film.

The movie-maker has also announced a sequel to its hit animation Zootopia as well as a fifth Toy Story film from Pixar.

There’s no word yet on any plots or scheduled release dates for the new movies.

Disney CEO Bob Iger said this week: “I’m so pleased to announce that we have sequels in the works from our animation studios to some of our most popular franchises, Toy Story, Frozen and Zootopia.

“We’ll have more to share about these productions soon, but this is a great example of how we’re leaning into our unrivaled brands and franchises.”

Frozen’s last instalment debuted in 2019, six years after the original animated musical that introduced us to royal sisters Elsa and Anna, and gave us the hit song Let It Go.

The first movie followed Elsa as she came to term with her magical ice powers after inadvertently trapping her kingdom in an eternal winter.

The sequel saw the sisters, along with Kristoff, Olaf and Sven, set out on a journey to discover the origin of Elsa’s magic.

Written by Jennifer Lee, the films feature original songs by husband and wife songwriting duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

A stage adaption of the original film opened on Broadway in 2018 before transferring to the West End in 2021 where it continues to play at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Samantha Barks currently stars as Elsa with Emily Lane as Anna.
