A stage adaptation of Disney’s Tangled is in the works

Disney's Tangled

Disney is developing a new stage adaptation of its hit animated movie Tangled.

Reimagining the classic fairy tale of Rapunzel, Tangled was released in 2010 and featured a voice cast of Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi and Donna Murphy with award-winning songs from Alan Menken and Glenn Slater.

The show was previously adapted for Disney’s Cruise Line with new songs, and now a new version is being workshopped by Disney Theatrical.

The news was revealed earlier in 2024 when the Actors’ Equity union in the US voted to authorize strike action over developmental work.

Further details for the show, including future plans on Broadway or in the West End, are to be announced.

Composer Alan Menken previously teased a potential move to the stage for Tangled, as well as 2007 movie Enchanted.

Many of the legendary music composer’s Disney works have already been brought to Broadway and the West End, including Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Hercules and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

He shared: “Enchanted I would love to see on the stage. The trick would be to get that animation into live action thing happening.”

And on Tangled, “We’re already talking about it for the stage”.

For now, watch this space!
