Elton John’s The Devil Wears Prada musical ‘likely’ to open in London

A musical adaption of The Devil Wears Prada with music from Elton John could come to London.

Delayed due to the pandemic, the production eventually made its premiere in Chicago in July 2022 ahead of an expected Broadway run.

However the Chicago Tribune now reports that it’s “likely” the show will instead open in London.

Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde, Hairspray) is set to takeover the production, although he told the publication a deal is yet to be confirmed.

The Devil Wears Prada musical is based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger and the 2006 movie adaption which featured Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.

It follows a young writer who lands a job at a prestigious magazine as a junior assistant to the publication’s editor-in-chief.

The stage adaptation has music by Elton John, lyrics by Shaina Taub and a book by Paul Rudnic.

Plans for a Broadway bow were put on hold with John telling Zoe Ball in an interview on Radio 2 last autumn it was “not ready”.

A follow up statement provided to Deadline read: “We learned a lot from our run in Chicago and look forward to continuing to work on the production and make the necessary changes. We have every intention of bringing the production to the stage again when we have the proper theater and the timing is right.”
