First look: New musical In Dreams at Leeds Playhouse with Lena Hall, Oliver Tompsett & more

A behind the scenes look and first listen of new musical In Dreams at Leeds Playhouse has been revealed.

The new show, which features the music of Roy Orbison, will make its world premiere at the venue from 3 July – 5 August 2023.

In Dreams has been written by Emmy and Golden Globe-winning and Olivier Award-nominated David West Read and is directed by multi-award winning Luke Sheppard, reuniting the pair following their success with & Juliet.

A first look trailer sees the company – led by Tony award-winning Lena Hall alongside West End stars Oliver Tompsett, Sian Reese-Williams and Noël Sullivan – singing the rock number Handle Me With Care by British American supergroup, Traveling Wilburys.

The acoustic version of the song performed in a rehearsal room, is accompanied by Musical Director Patrick Hurley on keys and Danny Short on guitar – performing the well-known track in a brand-new way.

A teaser of the new musical shares: “Set in New Mexico, the story revolves around the former lead singer of a country-rock band, who, at a critical moment in her life, invites her old bandmates to join her for “the party of a lifetime” while keeping her true motivations a secret.”

The full cast includes Leon Craig, Alma Cuervo, Gabriela García, Manuel Pacific, Richard Trinder, Mark Peachey, Fabiola Ocasio, Hannah Ducharme and Pablo Gómez Jones.

In Dreams has choreography by Fabian Aloise, set design by Arnulfo Donado, costume designs by Fay Fullerton, lighting design by Howard Hudson, sound design by Tom Marshall, music supervision by Catherine Jayes, musical direction by Patrick Hurley, video design by George Reeve, voice and dialect coaching by Salvatore Sorce and intimacy direction by Asha Jennings-Grant.
