Hit musical Hadestown is heading to the London’s West End – here’s all you need to know.
Hadestown is a musical with book, music and lyrics by Anaïs Mitchell, developed with Rachel Chavkin, based on Mitchell’s 2010 concept album.
When will Hadestown open in London?
The show, which first ran at the National Theatre in 2018, will return to London in 2024. It will run in the West End at the Lyric Theatre from 10 February.
Hadestown tickets went on sale from 23 May and are available now through to August.

Leading the opening cast of Hadestown in London are Dónal Finn as Orpheus, Grace Hodgett-Young as Eurydice, Melanie La Barrie as Hermes will be Melanie La Barrie, Gloria Onitiri as Persephone and Zachary James as Hades. You can meet the full cast here!
Rachel Chavkin directs the production which has choreography by David Neumann, scenic design by Rachel Hauck, costume design by Michael Krass, lighting design by Bradley King, sound design by Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz, musical director and vocal arrangements by Liam Robinson, orchestrations and arrangements by Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose and dramaturg Ken Cerniglia.
What is Hadestown about?
Hadestown is a contemporary adaptation of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. In a post-apocalyptic setting, the musical narrates the story of Orpheus, a talented musician, and his love for Eurydice, who succumbs to Hades’ lure of security and ventures into the underworld, Hadestown. Determined to save her, Orpheus embarks on a perilous journey to the underworld. The plot also involves Hades’ wife, Persephone, torn between her husband and the suffering souls in Hadestown.
The story reaches its apex as Orpheus tries to lead Eurydice back to the living world, bound by the condition not to look back at her until they are both safe.
Hadestown first premiered at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016 before a run in Canada. It then ran at the National Theatre’s Olivier Theatre between November 2018 and January 2019 ahead of opening on Broadway in April the same year.
The show has won numerous awards including 14 Tony nominations, winning eight including Best Musical and Best Score.
