Lin-Manuel Miranda reveals plans for a new stage musical in 2022

Lin-Manuel Miranda has revealed plans for a new stage musical in 2022.

The Hamilton creator has been busy working in film recently with a big screen adaptation of In The Heights, a movie of tick, tick… Boom! and upcoming Disney animation Encanto.

But soon we could see a brand new show from Lin on Broadway, with the composer saying he has “several ideas” for new works.

He told the New York Times’ Offstage digital series: “They happen when I’m in the shower or walking my dog…

“I don’t know which one is going to raise its hand at the dawn of 2022 but I know that it’s going to be like [mimes vomiting] when I finally have time to commit to it.”

Lin went on to speak about working to improve diversity and equity in theatre.

He said: “With business stopped and theatre everyone took a really long look at how many systems really kind of keep out Black and brown folks from being a part of the theatre experience, particularly on Broadway and how much poorer Broadway is for it.

“Speaking for only the part I know, at Hamilton that has been the work of the last year while we haven’t had shows on. It’s everything from the Hamilton racial justice taskforce that we created with cast members and stage managers to seeing how Hamilton can be an ambassador for social change and progress on the fronts for equity, diversity and inclusion.”

And finally, Lin teased a potential In The Heights revival.

He said of bringing the show back to the stage following its critically acclaimed movie version: “I’d love to do it. I’d love to just see Broadway come back!”
