New film adaptation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in the works

A new movie adaptation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is in the works.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical will be brought to the screen by director Jon M. Chu who previously adapted In The Heights and is now working on Wicked’s much awaited movie.

Deadline report that Chu has been “dreaming” about adapting the movie for years. It will be produced for Amazon Studios.

Further details on the project is to be announced.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is based on the story of Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis, telling the story of Jacob and his 12 sons.

The musical first premiered in the 1970s, featuring songs that have gone on to become pop and musical theatre classics, including Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door To Me, There’s One More Angel In Heaven and Go, Go, Go Joseph.

In 1999, a direct-to-video film adaptation was released starring Donny Osmond in the title role with Maria Friedman, Richard Attenborough, Ian McNeice and Joan Collins.

A new UK production recently ran in the West End and on tour, starring Jason Donovan and Jac Yarrow.
