Rose starring Maureen Lipman to transfer to West End in May

A West End transfer has been confirmed for Rose starring Maureen Lipman.

The revival of Martin Sherman’s 1999 play will run at Ambassador’s Theatre for 28 performances from 28 May – 18 June 2023. Tickets are on sale now here.

The production, directed by Scott Le Crass, previously ran at Hope Mill Theatre and Park Theatre in 2022 having streamed online during the pandemic.

Blending the personal with the political, this sharply drawn portrait of a feisty Jewish woman traces Rose’s story from the devastation of Nazi-occupied Europe to conquering the American dream. Rose reflects on what it means to be a survivor.

Her remarkable life began in a tiny Ukrainian village, took her to Warsaw’s ghettos and a ship called The Exodus, and finally to the boardwalks of Atlantic City, the Arizona canyons and salsa-flavoured nights in Miami beach.

Lipman said: “I am delighted to be putting Rose back on her bench for a limited run at the Ambassadors in May. I thought I could never have the power to revisit Martin Sherman’s mystical, magical deeply philosophical and wildly funny creation, but Rose is in my blood and she has to be revived.”

Sherman added: “Maureen Lipman’s performance as Rose is the greatest gift a playwright could ever dream of. Performance is perhaps the wrong word; she totally inhabits the role, the woman, the space, the language, the times, the events. I’m so happy that her astonishing alchemy has the opportunity to be witnessed again, for four weeks (only!) at the Ambassadors Theatre.”

The production has design by David Shields, musical composition & sound design by Julian Star and lighting design by Jane Lalljee.
