This stage adaptation of Peaky Blinders, crafted by Steven Knight and brought to life through the choreography and direction of Rambert’s Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer, showcases the talents of the entire Rambert dance company. This performance arrives as a celebratory marker of the decade since Peaky Blinders first captivated audiences on the BBC.
The narrative begins amidst the harrowing trenches of The Somme in 1916, then shifts to post-war industrial Birmingham. Here, the story of the Shelby family unfolds as they grapple with pivotal decisions shaping their destiny. Central to this tale is Tommy Shelby, who finds himself enamored by Grace, a mysterious newcomer. Unbeknownst to Tommy, Grace is a covert agent for Special Branch, tasked with infiltrating the core of his gang. As the plot unravels, a tapestry of heartbreak, betrayal, and vengeance is woven.
Adding a dynamic spoken-word dimension to the show is Birmingham-born writer and poet Benjamin Zephaniah, known for his role as street preacher Jeremiah Jesus in the TV series. The stage comes alive with the sounds of a live band performing newly commissioned pieces by Roman GianArthur, alongside iconic Peaky Blinders tracks from acclaimed artists such as Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, Radiohead, Anna Calvi, The Last Shadow Puppets, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
