Lucy Prebble’s critically acclaimed play The Effect is now available to watch online.

Presented by the National Theatre, in association with The Jamie Lloyd Company, the production has been released for streaming from 9 January 2024 on the National Theatre at Home platform.

Captured during its stint on the Lyttelton stage at the National Theatre in London, the production, described as ‘glorious’ by the Mail on Sunday with a five-star rating, is directed by the renowned Jamie Lloyd.

It tells the story of two young volunteers participating in a clinical drug trial. Their unexpected romance raises complex questions, challenging the supervising doctors and captivating audiences with its exploration of love and ethics.

The London run of ‘The Effect’ was a resounding success and is set to transfer to The Shed in New York for a limited period from 3 to 31 March 2024.

The production features stellar performances by Paapa Essiedu, known for The Lazarus Project, and Taylor Russell from Bones and All.

Also on the cast are Michele Austin, recognised for her roles in This Is Going to Hurt and Cyrano de Bergerac, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith from Tina Turner: The Musical.

National Theatre at Home ensures accessibility for all, with captions available for all titles and over 70% featuring Audio Description.
