Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends cast recording CD release

A cast recording of Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends is to be released on CD and digital formats.

Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends: A Celebration (Live at the Sondheim Theatre) will be released on Friday, 8 December. You can pre-order the CD online now here.

The recording, available in the US and the UK, encapsulates the essence of the theatrical event that took London by storm on 3 May, 2022. Held at The Sondheim Theatre, the gala was an electrifying celebration of Sondheim’s unparalleled contribution to the arts. Featuring a galaxy of stars from Broadway, the West End, and film, the event was a fitting homage to the legendary composer and lyricist.

The album boasts an impressive collection of 41 songs, showcasing the breadth and depth of Sondheim’s work. Produced by Lee McCutcheon, Stephen Metcalfe, and Cameron Mackintosh, it includes a 16-page booklet adorned with colour photography and insightful essays by Mackintosh and David Benedict, offering a deeper glimpse into the life and legacy of Stephen Sondheim.

The original 2022 Gala, a brainchild of Cameron Mackintosh, was staged by Matthew Bourne and Maria Friedman. The album features a star-studded lineup including Michael Ball, Rob Brydon, Helena Bonham Carter, Judi Dench, Damian Lewis, and Imelda Staunton, alongside students from prestigious arts schools.

Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends continues to run in the West End this winter season for a limited engagement through to 6 January 2024.
