A Grease prequel called Summer Lovin’ is in the works

A prequel to the hit movie musical Grease is in the works.

The original film was released in 1978, based on the 1971 Broadway musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and the late Warren Casey.

It tells the love story of Danny and Sandy – played by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John – during their time at Rydell High School.

One of the songs, Summer Nights, will be the basis of the new prequel.

Titled Summer Lovin’, the film will reveal what happened between Danny and Sandy during their summer fling before starting school together.

Deadline reports that Brett Haley will direct with a screenplay by Leah McKendrick.

Further details such as potential casting and music is to be confirmed.

A sequel to Grease, Grease 2, was released in 1982 but failed to live up to the success of its predecessor.
