Joker sequel with Lady Gaga will be a jukebox musical

Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix in Joker 2

In a blend of chaos and melody, the sequel to Todd Phillips’ Joker is gearing up to serenade and unsettle audiences in equal measure.

Starring Lady Gaga alongside Joaquin Phoenix,Joker: Folie à Deux is shrouded in mystery, especially concerning its musical direction.

Sources close to Variety have spilled that the sequel is leaning towards being “mostly a jukebox musical”, incorporating at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs, including a nod to “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 classic “The Band Wagon”.

Jukebox musicals are of course not new to box office success, with “Mamma Mia!” and “Moulin Rouge!” being prime examples. ]

However Joker 2 may not just be about covers, with whispers of original songs possibly making their way into the film. The specifics of who might pen these tracks or lend their voices to the tunes remain under wraps.

One certainty is the return of Hildur Guðnadóttir, whose Oscar-winning compositions for the first “Joker” film are expected to bring their haunting touch to the musical numbers.

Set for release this October, the film, cloaked in the dramatic backdrop of Arkham Asylum, boasts an ensemble cast with Emmy nominee Zazie Beetz, and Oscar nominees Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson joining Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga.

Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the original movie which made more than $1 billion in the box office.

Based on characters from the DC Comics, the film received a total of 11 Academy Awards and BAFTA nominations as well as four Golden Globe nominations.
