Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster to star in Sweeney Todd on Broadway

Tony Award winners Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster will be leading the new cast of Sweeney Todd on Broadway.

The pair will takeover from current stars Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford, who depart on 14 January 2024. Tveit and Foster will begin performances on 9 February for a 12-week run through to 5 May. Tickets are on sale now here

From 17 January – 8 February, the roles of Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett will be play by current Sweeney Todd cast members, including standbys Nicholas Christopher and Jeanna de Waal.

Aaron Tveit, fresh from his Tony-winning performance in Moulin Rouge! The Musical, will step into the challenging role of the vengeful barber, Sweeney Todd. Tveit’s vocal prowess and charismatic stage presence make him a thrilling choice for the dark and intricate character. His recent triumphs on the Broadway stage have solidified his reputation as one of the most versatile leading men of his generation.

On the other hand, Sutton Foster, known for her remarkable roles in musicals like Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes, will take on the role of Mrs. Lovett, the pie-maker with a sinister secret. Foster, with her impeccable comedic timing and unparalleled vocal range, is expected to bring a unique twist to the character, promising audiences a Mrs. Lovett like they’ve never seen before.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street with its haunting score and riveting storyline, delves into the tale of a barber seeking vengeance on those who wronged him, with the assistance of his pie-making accomplice. The musical, featuring music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, has remained a favourite among theatre enthusiasts since its original debut in 1979 and has seen numerous revivals and adaptations across the globe.

The new revival opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in March 2023, directed by Thomas Kail.
