Cynthia Erivo to star in Prima Facie film adaptation

Cynthia Erivo is to star in a film adaptation of recent West End play Prima Facie.

The piece by Suzie Miller played in London last year before transferring to Broadway, starring starring Jodie Comer.

A new film adaptation has this week been announced (via Variety), starring Cynthia Erivo as lawyer Tessa.

BAFTA winner and Emmy nominee Susanna White will direct with Miller adapting the stage play for the screen. Erivo will also executive produce the movie.

Tessa is a thoroughbred. A young, brilliant barrister. She has worked her way up from working class origins to be at the top of her game; prosecuting; cross examining and winning. An unexpected event forces her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge.

Erivo said: “Tessa’s experience sheds such vulnerable light on the complex conversations around consent and sexual abuse and the law that surrounds it, which is all too relatable for so many and timely for all.

“Jodie Comer’s powerhouse exploration of that struggle on Broadway is nothing short of beautiful and heart-wrenching. When I read this script I knew it was important work to do. I look forward to getting to know who Tessa is to me as Prima Facie goes from stage to screen.”

Further details and a release date are to be announced.

For now, Erivo will soon be seen in the upcoming Wicked film adaptation.
