Dirty Dancing sequel in the works with Jennifer Grey

A sequel to hit 1987 musical film Dirty Dancing is in the works.

Jennifer Grey, who starred in the original movie, will return to both star and produce the new instalment.

Jon Feltheimer, CEO of movie studio Lionsgate, said: “It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history.

Grey starred alongside Patrick Swayze in the original film in the roles of Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman and Johnny Castle respectively.

Featuring songs such as “Hungry Eyes”, “Hey! Baby”, “Do You Love Me?” and “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life”, Dirty Dancing tells the love story of the two characters who are brought together by dance.

Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis (Five Feet Apart, The Curse of La LLorona) will write the screenplay for the new film, with the plot to be revealed.

Casting beyond Grey and a planned release date are also yet to be confirmed.

The original film was previously adapted into a stage show which played on the West End for five years. A new Dirty Dancing UK tour was recently announced.

There was also 2004 prequel Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights and a TV film adaption which aired on ABC in the US in 2017.
