Fisherman’s Friends musical to premiere this autumn

A new musical based on The Fisherman’s Friends is to premiere this autumn.

Fisherman’s Friends musical is based on the true story of the Cornish singing sensations, and the hit 2019 film of the same name.

The piece will debut at Hall for Cornwall in Truro for a limited season between 13 and 30 October, 2021 with tickets on sale from 11 May.

A synopsis of the musical shares: “When a group of Cornish fisherman came together to sing the traditional working songs they’d sung for generations, they hoped to raise a few quid for charity. Nobody, least of all the fisherman, expected the story to end on the Pyramid stage of Glastonbury…

“A group of fishermen are spotted by a fish-out-of-water music manager on a trip from London, who must learn there is more to life then selling your sole for fifteen minutes of fame. Packed with more sea shanties than you can fit in a lobster trawler, this is a feel-good voyage about friendship, community and music that will give any land-lover a mighty pair of sea legs.

“So climb aboard, set sail and feel the salty sea air rush through your hair. Or better still, forget that emmet nonsense and pour yourself a pint and just start singing along.

“Featuring hit shanties made famous by the band including Keep Haulin’, Nelson’s Blood, No Hopers Jokers & Rogues, Sweet Maid Of Madeira and many more.”

The real Fisherman’s Friends said of the musical: “Blimey me how did that happen! We are so proud that that Musical based on our unexpected voyage will be launched down here in the heart of Cornwall.”

Julien Boast, Chief Executive and Creative Director of Hall For Cornwall, added: “We think there’s no better way to Raise the Curtain on Hall for Cornwall following our major transformation.

“Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical is a perfect tonic to lift us from recent events which have impacted all our lives and a great celebration of people, passion and possibilities which are at the heart of our new theatre. The show will form the foundation of our inaugural launch season, with more details being announced in the spring.”

Fisherman’s Friends: The Musical will be directed by James Grieve and written by Brad Birch. It features design by Lucy Osborne with musical supervision from David White.
